- Have a qualified auto mechanic check the condition of your car's cooling, charging and exhaust systems. These frigid temperatures can only exacerbate any faulty parts of these systems. Your car's battery can lose up to 30% of its power when the temperature hits freezing, and 60% if it goes below zero.
- Installing new windshield wipers can make a world of difference if you are caught in a snowfall. Worn out wipers will not sufficiently keep your windshield clear and make visibility a problem. Check that your wiper fluid is full too, because the higher quality fluids will not freeze as easily.
- Remember that all-wheel-drive doesn't mean you are any safer. During snow storms and icy conditions an all-wheel-drive is meant to get your car going, but won't improve your stopping. Slow down and leave extra space.
- Keep a winter kit in your car. If you do experience a breakdown, emergency response times may be slower in these conditions. It is always a good idea to keep a flashlight, warm gloves, warm clothes, nonperishable snacks, a small shovel and a bag of kitty litter in your car. Always keep a cellphone car charger in your car.
- Clear snow from your tailpipe before starting your car. You may want to warm your car up before venturing on a trip, but if your tailpipe is blocked by snow carbon monoxide will build up in the car's interior. Clear the roof as well, since this is a ticketable offense.
